Sleek, stylish and slim, the OnePlus X Smartphone is poised to make some waves when it is introduced in late October, becoming one of the first smartphones with an acute focus on design and aesthetics over processing power.
In our evolving age of cell phone ubiquity, it seems as though a product like the OnePlus X Smartphone was inevitable. More and more, these handheld devices are becoming fashion accessories as much as they are communication tools. Many people use their smartphone constantly throughout the day, and as such, it becomes a part of your overall look.
With the OnePlus X Smartphone, the team at OnePlus is looking to hone in on this reality. It will be the third major release from OnePlus, following the flagship OnePlus One and the OnePlus 2, which was released this past summer. It’s somewhat strange to see such a new model announced so shortly after the last one, but it is clear that OnePlus is targeting a different customer segment with the OnePlus X.
OnePlus X Smartphone: Form Over Function?
Since OnePlus has not officially unveiled its new device, we’re going mostly off of industry rumors and whispers with regards to the OnePlus X Smartphone, but from the sounds of it, the company appears to be prioritizing aesthetic appeal over high-end technological prowess while attempting to maintain its commitment to offering products at a reasonable price. Much like the Unlocked Moto X, it lends freedom and affordability to an industry that is mired with restrictions, commitments and sky-high costs.
The OnePlus X is believed to run on Qualcomm Snapdragon 801, which is not actually the latest and fastest processor available in that line (Qualcomm has an 810 version, and the OnePlus 2 smartphone runs on that). It’s an interesting choice, but likely one that was necessary in order to keep the price point in the range that OnePlus wanted. Rumor has it that the OnePlus X will retail at $249, which is far cheaper than most competing phones on the market.
Chances are that consumers who are interested in purchasing a OnePlus X Smartphone won’t be too concerned with the slightly outdated inner hardware, which still packs plenty of punch at 1.9GHz, rear and front-facing cameras, and more. OnePlus posted a tweet on Tuesday hinting at an October 29th launch date in London for the new model, adding the hashtag #PowerfullyBeautiful.

Founded in December of 2013 in China and brandishing the motto “Never Settle,” OnePlus has a simple mission: creating smartphones that look great, offer top-tier functionality and quality, and don’t carry a price point that would require you to take out a mortgage in order to buy one. The OnePlus One was a big hit after it was released in 2014, even though the company’s ill-fated “Smash the Past” campaign caused an awful lot of people to destroy their cell phones for no reason.
OnePlus subsequently released the OnePlus 2, which featured an updated look and improved processing hardware, although the company had some issues with meeting demand at launch and ended up shipping most of its supplies almost a month after the initially targeted ship date.
Through it all, OnePlus continues to be viewed positively by the market at large, owing to their consumer-friendly approach and their relatively low price points. We’re curious to see what kind of innovations might be revealed when the OnePlus X Smartphone makes its official debut later this month.
